When working with very large graphs where the nodes are
connected by long edges it is useful to navigate through the graph by
taking advantage of the graph structure. This is done by following edges
through the graph. The Follow Edge item of the main menu offers
this navigation method. A shortcut is the 'e' key.
The Follow Edge operation works like this:
- First one node has to be selected by the mouse
- Then one edge that starts or ends at this node is highlighted
- Left-clicking highlights the next edge
- Right-clicking centers the node at the other end of the highlighted
edge in the graph window; from the new node the steps 3 and 4 can be
repeated (another edge can be selected and followed)
- Right-clicking ends the Follow Edge operation
History list of nodes
A history is implemented via the Follow Edge
operation so that the path through the graph can be traced back.
Pressing the 'h' key during the Follow Edge operation causes
the history dialog box to appear that shows all the nodes encountered
during the Follow Edge operation. The list of nodes is shown
as a list of the following node attributes:
- Title (default)
- Label
- Information field 1, 2, or 3
The Follow Edge dialog box is used as follows:
- Selecting a node from the list and
then pressing the Select Node button centers the selected node
in the main window.
- The Next Edge button enables
the edges connected to the centered node in the main window to be
cycled through. The next edge to be followed is chosen in this manner.
- Pressing the Follow Edge
button causes the edge selected to be followed.
- See Table 6
