aiSee for Unix: User Manual<>index

Node information

Apart from a node label, additional information, i.e. text can be associated with a node. The Information submenu enables this information to be accessed.

  • To access the desired information, choose one of the submenu entries or press one of the shortcut keys 'i', 'j', or 'k', followed by left-clicking on a node
  • Clicking in an open information window causes it to close again

Viewing additional information disables some advanced features like subgraph operations. However, basic features like navigation and scaling stay enabled. Right-clicking enables all additional information windows to be closed and the Show Information mode to be exited.

From release 2.1.60 on, aiSee also allows the user to first select a node or a subgraph and then to switch between its additional information windows by pressing 'i', 'j', or 'k'.

Application specific information

aiSee allows up to three different pieces of additional information, i.e. text fields, to be associated with a node. For instance, an application using aiSee to visualize graphs may provide additional information with each node. Usually the application defines titles for these pieces of information, enabling the titles to be found and selected in the Information submenu (see GDL in a Nutshell). If no titles are defined by the application the default menu items are:

Menu item

Key

Effect

0 (normal, i)

i

Displays information window 1 with a scale factor of normal

1 (normal, j)

j

Displays information window 2 with a scale factor of normal

2 (normal, k)

k

Displays information window 3 with a scale factor of normal

0 (scaled)

Displays information window 1 with the current scale factor

1 (scaled)

Displays information window 2 with the current scale factor

2 (scaled)

Displays information window 3 with the current scale factor

For example, if aiSee is used to visualize family trees in which the nodes contain the names, the additional information fields could be used to display the date and place of birth and the individual's address. The menu items could then be:

Date of Birth (normal, i)

Place of Birth (normal, j)

Address (normal, k)

Date of Birth (scaled)

Place of Birth (scaled)

Address (scaled)

Neighbors in Europe
2002 FIFA World Cup

Node label

The menu item Node Label displays the label of a node in normal size. This is useful if the graph has been scaled down to such an extent that label text is no longer readable.

Node layout attributes

The Node Layout menu item shows the layout attributes of nodes, such as the node title, a node's absolute (x,y) coordinates, width and height, etc. (see Node attributes table).

Statistics of the graph

The Statistics menu item shows some statistics pertaining to the graph including the graph size, number of nodes and edges, number of crossings, etc. (see Statistics table).
