Views

View Dialog BoxA view is how a graph appears in the graph window after the layout is calculated. There are three main view modes:

Select View... in the main menu or press the 'v' key to open the View dialog box, in which the different views can be selected and the view parameters changed (see Table 3 for the keyboard commands in this dialog box).

Normal view

The graph appears in the graph window, a flat coordinate system being depicted by a linear scale. The scaling factor for the graph is infinitely variable. Despite the scaling possibilities there is often a compromise in the image of large graphs between a detailed view and an overview. Therefore, the following two browsing methods exist. They can also be used in combination:

  • Information -> Node Label
    Displays the label of a node in normal size, very useful if the graph has been scaled down to such an extent that label text is no longer readable.
  • Scroll -> Panner
    The graph is scaled down in a second little window (the panner window), so that the whole graph is visible. A dashed rectangle marks the part of the graph that is visible in the main window.

General view parameters

The View dialog box offers some general view parameters that can be turned on or off:

  • Display/hide all edges, nodes, icons, node/edge labels, or subgraph labels
  • Use/do not use splines for drawing edges
  • Enable/disable fast font drawing

In addition, Animation Speed after Relayout can be adjusted or turned off in this box. The speed is specified in terms of the maximum number of animated iterations. If a new layout is calculated for a graph and if animation is turned on, meaning a rate or animation speed is given, the user can follow the movement of the nodes from their initial positions in the layout to the newly calculated ones. (Cf. graph animation).

The value of Neighbor Region Range describes the extent of neighbor regions.
